Prerequisites for the course
There are no prerequisites for this course but it is recommended that you have some basic electrical knowledge or some experience in maintaining and repairing portable equipment.

Course overview
You will learn how to inspect and test portable equipment in line with the IEE Code of Practice. The course will cover the basics of testing class I and II equipment using a variety of instruments. You will get to use industry-standard PAT testing instruments and barcode scanners to verify the safe operation of portable equipment. You will also learn how to produce customer reports from your tests and to generate reports automatically using a PAT tester linked to a computer and printer.

You will take revision tests during the course comprising typical questions to prepare you for the City and Guilds 2377 Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (multiple-choice assessment).

identify and describe electrical supply safety systems
identify and describe electrical safety systems for portable appliances
use the IEE Code of Practice as a reference when inspecting and testing of portable

identify classification of portable equipment
identify cable types and state their current ratings
identify correct fuse rating for portable equipment
state the tests to be carried out on portable appliance in accordance with the IEE
  Code of Practice
determine the frequency of testing of portable appliances depending on their type and
  use
use instruments to perform continuity and insulation resistance tests on portable
  equipment
interpret meter readings and troubleshoot portable equipment
produce test reports for portable equipment in a common format
configure and use a PAT tester to fully test portable equipment
use an PAT tester linked to a computer to automatically generate and print reports
keep records of tests on portable equipment using various methods (e.g. by
  spreadsheets, bar-coding)
   
  Method of Assessment
  You will need to take City and Guilds 2377 Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (multiple-choice on-line assessment) as part of your career progression to become a qualified portable appliance tester.
