Essential Electrical Theory

Duration of the course
4 days intensive training, or 2 evenings per week for 4 weeks, or 4 Saturdays.

Course fees: £315

Prerequisites for the course
There are no prerequisites for this course but it is recommended that you have some basic knowledge of electrical circuits. For example, you may have taken our Domestic Practical Wiring course or our Commercial Practical Wiring course. Alternatively, you might be a practising electrician but need to learn more about the theoretical side of the trade, perhaps to pass exams to get qualified.

Course overview
This course covers the essential theory required to support the practical work of an electrician. You will learn how to interpret simple circuit diagrams and electrical symbols in simple circuits. You will also perform calculations involving current, voltage resistance and power. The course covers other essential topics such as transformer operation, applications of electromagnetism, and cable voltage drop calculations.

  Course outcomes
At the end of the course, you will be able to…

Identify electrical symbols
Interpret electrical diagrams
describe the operation of simple AC and DC circuits
perform calculations for voltage, current and resistance
describe how to connect instruments in a circuit to measure voltage and current
perform calculations on series and parallel connected circuits
determine the voltage drop in cables by calculation
perform calculations for power in a circuit
describe the principles of magnetism and electromagnetism
describe applications of electromagnets
describe the principle of operation of a transformer
Identify and describe types of transformers
perform calculations for primary and secondary voltages and currents in a
  transformer using turns ratios

  Method of Assessment
We will assess your progress on the course by regular coursework exercises. You will also take a multiple-choice test at the end of the course to check your knowledge. Successful completion of the coursework the multiple-choice test will lead to a college certificate and entry to subsequent courses.
